About Urbanity Dance

Chicago's home for
adult Latin and social dance

Urbanity Dance is an adult dance studio in Lincoln Park focused entirely on the styles most people actually want to learn: Salsa, Bachata, Zouk, Kizomba, Heels, and Hip Hop.

We don't teach kids' recitals or wedding dances. Every class, every instructor, and every playlist is built for adults who want to move well — whether that's on a social dance floor, at a Latin club, or just for yourself.

You don't need experience, a partner, or any particular level of coordination. You need to show up.

Why Urbanity

We're not the only adult dance studio
in Chicago. Here's what's different.

Partner Dances + Solo Styles
The full picture, under one roof
Urbanity is one of the few studios in Chicago where you can go deep on Afro-Latin partner dances — Salsa, Bachata, Zouk, Kizomba — and also train in Heels and Hip Hop, all at the same studio, with instructors who specialize in each.
Depth Over Breadth
Curriculum built to actually take you somewhere
Every style has a real progression: Fundamentals, Core 1, Core 2, Prep Cycles, Intermediate. Our instructors compete, perform, and attend international festivals in the styles they teach. You're not getting a sampler class — you're building a real skill.
Your Style
We teach technique. You decide what to do with it.
The goal isn't to turn you into a copy of your instructor. We give you a technical foundation and then encourage you to explore how you want to dance. That's what makes social dancing feel like you.
Inclusive by Design
A safe space to learn, full stop
Urbanity is genuinely inclusive — across backgrounds, body types, experience levels, and identities. We've built a culture where everyone feels welcome and no one feels judged. That's not marketing language. It's what our students tell us keeps them coming back.
A Real Scene
Community that lives outside the classroom
Our students go out dancing together at Chicago's Latin nights. They practice at our monthly socials. They travel to festivals together. Taking a class here means entering a community that exists well beyond our studio walls.
World-Class Guests
International artists, right here in Lincoln Park
Urbanity regularly hosts guest artists and residencies from the international Latin and urban dance world. As a student here, you get access to workshops with performers you'd otherwise only see at festivals — without buying a plane ticket.

Common Questions

Before you walk in the door

Do I need a partner to take classes?

No partner needed — ever. Our partner dance classes rotate so you'll dance with multiple people throughout the class. This actually accelerates your learning because you adapt to different partners. Solo styles like Heels and Hip Hop are individual by nature.

I have zero dance experience. Is that okay?

That's exactly who our beginner classes are designed for. We assume nothing. You don't need rhythm, coordination, or prior training — just the willingness to try. Most of our students started with zero background.

What's the difference between all these styles? How do I pick?

Salsa and Bachata are the most social and most common at Latin nights. Zouk is more expressive and flowy. Kizomba is close-connection and grounded. Heels is a solo feminine style. Hip Hop is street-based choreography. If you're unsure, take our style quiz or try a drop-in beginner Bachata or Salsa class first — both are great entry points.

How do classes and pricing work?

You can drop into a single class, buy a class pass, or join a monthly membership if you want to dance multiple times a week. We recommend using our purchase quiz to find the right option based on how often you want to come and what styles you're interested in.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothes you can move in. For footwear: avoid rubber-soled sneakers if possible — they grip the floor and make turning harder. Dance shoes are ideal but not required. Smooth-soled shoes or socks work fine for your first few classes.

Where exactly are you located and how do I get there?

We're at 1611 N Sheffield Ave in Lincoln Park on Chicago's North Side. Street parking is available in the neighborhood. We're accessible by CTA and a short walk or ride-share from the Fullerton Red/Brown/Purple line stop.
